Sadly the day has comes where you and your loved one have decided to move on and end the relationship. It is a very hard situation to go through and one that can be difficult to overcome, especially with emotions running wild. The trick here is to be alert and think clearly. While it is understandable for you to be upset there are still a few things you need to focus on doing when you separate from your partner.

We recommend taking a deep breath and accepting the fact that the relationship has ended and focus your mind because there are four main things you need to do when you separate from your partner.

  • Stay Civil – There is nothing worse than breaking up badly. This can only in bitter feuds, bad attitudes and a process that can drag on for years. Stay civil and act responsibly. Be honest with your partner and explain your perspective plans with them. This is this is especially important if there are children involved in the separation. Be honest with your child without slamming the other parent – it will damage the relationship.
  • Change Passwords & ATM Pins – As soon as you are sure the relationship has ended you want to change the passwords to your logins on the computer as you would like to keep your personal belongings safe and secure. You will also need to change your ATM pin and sort out your bank accounts. Change your ATM pin of your own bank account, but when it comes to shared accounts, speak calmly to your partner and discuss the idea of closing your joint account.
  • Be Fair With Your Possessions – If you can mutually split the items between you and your partner you will save a tonne of money in hiring lawyers and going to court. Be fair with your partner on what they want, and what you want. There is a policy to go all “divide and conquer” with them and that is not the way. It can lead to a bitter feud in the long run. Keep civil and mature during this process.
  • Call Your Friends – One of the best things you can do as a newly separated adult is to call your friends and go out for dinner and drinks. The company and ability to talk will help you get through the pain of the separation and you know your friends would welcome the excuse to get out of the house a little bit and unwind!
